Sherwood Forest
Were the situation not so grim and dangerous Maryam might have laughed. It was more than a league distant from Hode manor before she could no longer hear Robardâs shouted curses at his captors. He insulted their manhood, their parentage and fighting ability in equal measure. And from the sound of it he was not being captured easily, but he was being taken alive. This knowledge was the only thing that allowed her to run and not return to his side and kill as many of the Lionheartâs men as she could. If they died, at least they would die together.
But she knew he was right, if she could find Little John, Will and the others, they had a much better chance of freeing him. The Shire Reeve was out for revenge. And revenge was a poor reason to fight. It made one careless and sloppy. Wendenal had been defeated once and soundly. Maryam would see her love free again, or she would take Wendenalâs life herself.
She ran on, moving through the forest like a ghost. She had returned her bow to her shoulder and drew the daggers from the sleeves of her tunic. It was possible there were more soldiers about and she would be ready. Somehow they had gotten wind of Robardâs return and had been waiting. Robard had noticed the warning signs, but had lost control when he smelled the smoke of his burning home. It should have made her angry, but instead it made her smile.
Maryam was in love with him. She knew it. And she had been almost from the moment she had first tried to kill him in the Holy Land. But she had quickly learned that Robard and Tristan as well were men of honor, unlike most Crusaders she had met and fought. The al hashashin training she had undergone had instilled in her the notion that men of honor were to be treated with the highest respect. They could still be enemies, to be sure. But an honorable enemy made the warrior who fought with him or against him that much stronger.
And she had never met a more honorable man that Robard. In some ways he was even more so than Tristan, whom she loved dearly as a friend, but not in the way she loved Robard. Tristan was one of a kind. Decent, compassionate, brave and loyal, but Robard was all those things as well and more. He was impetuous, foolhardy, hot tempered and sometimes more stubborn than an entire herd of camels. But he was also courageous and determined and at the same time he could be so gentle and kind. It was the roiling sea of his emotions that made her love him.
When they arrived at Hode Land on their journey with Tristan and she had seen him embrace his mother and mourn his father, she knew. When he had stood up to the vile Shire Reeve and lit a fire of freedom from oppression in the people of the forest, she knew.
